Chris Sununu: No Salem Toll Booth

Chris Sununu, Republican Candidate for Executive Council District 3, slammed Councilor Hollingsworth today for supporting a plan to install tolls in Salem.

PROPOSED SALEM TOLL BOOTH WILL “DESTROY” SMALL BUSINESSES AND THE REGION’S RETAIL ECONOMY

EXETER – Today, Chris Sununu, Republican candidate for the District 3 Executive Council seat, issued the following statement:

“NHDOT Commissioner George Campbell’s scheme to erect a toll booth in Salem, New Hampshire is terribly misguided and will destroy the retail economy that supports the southern region of our state. What’s worse, Bev Hollingworth and John Lynch are allowing Campbell, who was never elected by voters, to dictate a policy agenda without considering the interests of the residents and small business owners who live and operate along the southern border. That should never happen.

“Bev Hollingworth’s ‘go along to get along’ style is not what citizens deserve. These are tough economic times, and the last thing our state’s small businesses need is another tax. Make no mistake; a toll booth on Interstate-93 in Salem is a tax. It’s a tax on small businesses that depend on consumers who cross the border to shop, and it’s a tax on commuters who live in New Hampshire and drive to Massachusetts for their jobs.

“Hollingworth approved the state’s 10-year highway plan having never considered the full costs, and now she wants to raise revenue on the backs of New Hampshire’s commuters and small businesses to pay for her short-sightedness.

“The residents of District 3 do not want a toll booth in Salem and they deserve an Executive Councilor who will hold the governor and his bureaucrats accountable. In the Council, I will not be afraid to lead on difficult issues, and I will not hesitate to stand-up to unelected agency heads who try to circumvent the will of the people.”
