Today, First District candidates Frank Guinta and Bob Bestani issued statements regarding CSP voting to raise the US National Debt ceiling.

Guinta:

FRANK GUINTA ON US HOUSE VOTES TO RAISE DEBT CEILING AND SPEND ON ‘STIMULUS 2′

Carol Shea-Porter votes to increase debt limit and spend another 200 billion in stimulus money

Manchester, NH – Last night, Carol Shea-Porter cast two very significant votes, giving Congress the green light to spend more taxpayer money on already failed policies. By narrow margins, the House voted to increase the country’s borrowing limit by 300 billion dollars and to spend another nearly 200 billion in a ‘Stimulus 2’ package to accomplish what ‘Stimulus 1’ failed to do-create jobs. 1st District Congressional Candidate Frank Guinta released the following statement on the votes:

“If this is not evidence of a spending addiction nothing is. Carol Shea-Porter first voted to increase the national debt limit and then rapidly followed that vote with one to spend the money. We have the highest deficit in history and Carol Shea-Porter says we still do not have enough money to spend. She and her colleagues have maxed out their credit cards and just decided to increase their limit without approval from those that have to pay it back—the American public. The second vote was cloaked in a title of jobs, but the reality is it is nothing more than an extension of the notoriously failed first stimulus. This must stop. It is time to learn that whether it is jobs, the overall economy, or health care, simply throwing money at a problem does not fix it. We need real reform to reinvigorate the economy and that includes tax credits and deductions for small businesses and health care reform that will reduce the cost. Both these measures would allow companies to thrive and grow and hire more struggling Americans so we may truly get this economy back on track.” Frank Guinta, 1st District Congressional Candidate

Bestani:

“Yesterday Carol Shea Porter and Nancy Pelosi’s House of Representatives voted to increase the United States Debt ceiling by $290 billion to $12.394 trillion. In effect, this action increases their credit card limit for wasteful government spending with the bill to be sent to the American taxpayer.

The United States cannot afford the extreme profligacy of the Democratic Congress which has exacerbated the irresponsible behavior of the Congress in past years. Both parties must work together to restore fiscal responsibility and sobriety to the management of our national finances. What we cannot afford is to balloon our national debt to such a significant level that the world loses faith in our willingness and ability to repay our obligations. If they do, the financial crisis of last September will look like a pleasant day in Prescott Park.

I am running for Congress to be a responsible steward of America’s money, not a creative spender of it. Although the Congress has no choice but to increase the tax limit (lest the U.S. defaults on its obligations) Republicans were right in voting against this measure as a symbolic act to highlight the problem. They recognize that this measure is leveraging the future of our children and grandchildren and threatening to undermine the faith of the world in our financial solvency.”

The similarity of these comments points to the need for an open, public debate between the candidates. The sooner, the better.
